LIVING WITH EPILEPSY

PREGNANT WOMEN

Epilepsy during Pregnancy

It is difficult to predict in what ways pregnancy will have an effect on epilepsy. There are different effects on many women, good and bad. Some women are just unaffected and others sometimes see their condition improving. In the other way pregnancy can cause stress, physically and emotionally. With all of that, seizures become more frequent and severe.

Your care during pregnancy

Before you become pregnant, or in the early days of pregnancy, you'll be referred to an obstetrician who will explain and plan your care during pregnancy. A neurologist sometimes may also be involved in putting a goodplan together.

There will be scans to help detect any developmental problems in your baby, and you may need extra blood tests to check the level of anti-epileptic drugs in your blood. If there is a strong history of epilepsy in your family or your partner's family, your care team will talk to you about the possibility of your baby inheriting the condition.
